Pigment spots are caused by a build-up of pigment cells (melanin). This makes it visible as a stain on the skin surface. Pigment spots can occur after an inflammatory reaction such as after acne or wounds. Pigment spots may also be caused by excessive exposure to sunlight, such as age spots (Lentigo Solaris). Ipl, which stands for Intense Pulse Light, is used to treat pigment stains.
Expected result
Per treatment, the pigment stain will become less and less.

Precaution
The skin cannot be tanned during the treatment process. Therefore, the to be treated area cannot be exposed to sun or a sunbed for at least 6 weeks prior to the treatment. We recommend consistently applying sunscreen with SPF 30 or 50 to the area and/or covering the area.
During treatment
The skin therapist adjusts the laser to your skin type and the characteristics of the pigmentation spots. She places the laser head on the pigment spot and gives pulses on all present pigmentation spots. The pigment in the skin absorbs the light of the laser, which is converted into heat and leads to the desired tissue damage. The advantage of laser therapy is that you can properly aim the laser pulses, leaving the skin cells around the pigment spot undamaged. During the treatment, the patient may experience the pulses of light as warm short pinpricks, this is generally not experienced as painful.
Aftercare
After the treatment, the skin may be red and warm to the touch. The skin therapist will cool the skin with cold packs. The pigment spot can become darker of colour and scabs can form. It is important to leave the scabs alone for optimal recovery of the skin.
